We have all seen the horrific news on the murder of Mahsa Amini in Iran from the “morality police”. Such an ironic name — there is nothing moral about them and certainly nothing Islamic either. Mahsa’s murder has sparked much needed protests across Iran and around the world, fighting for Women’s rights, and against gender-based violence.

Islam is a religion of choice and one that must not be forced upon any individual. The Quran clearly states: “There is no compulsion in religion” (2:256) declaring that religion is a very personal choice. Allah gives us the commandments, makes it clear, and it is up to us to decide what we choose to follow or not. There is absolutely nothing Islamic about forcing a dress code upon anyone, and these men are simply using religion just to try to police women.

But if you are one of the millions around the world fighting for Iranian women to have freedom of their own bodies, you must equally be fighting for women who are trying to wear the hijab without harassment or violence as well. Women — especially in France, Turkey, India and sometimes even right here at home are fighting for their religious freedom to wear the hijab.

Verona is a brand all about modesty but above that we are a brand of choice. A choice to wear the hijab or not. Liberation isn’t about wearing or not wearing the hijab it's about having the freedom to make your own decisions on your own terms. That is what real feminism looks like.
